Without warning, my rod jerked out of my hand. I snatched it before it flipped out of the boat. The tip
bent to the water and then snapped back. The line broke, another Texas rig lost. One side of the boat
dipped toward the water and sprang back up. Koko barked. A thump on the floor of the boat and a pool
of water accumulated in that same place. A fish hook fluttered above the puddle between Koko and me.
“What’s happening?” popped out of my mouth.
A small bit of fishing line attached to a hook quivered above the spot of water and I moved closer to
inspect. I reached to touch the hook and a slap knocked my hand away. Startled, I fell back onto the
floor, my back slamming against the bench seat.
Koko jumped close to the hook and barked. He bit at the hook and yelped as something cuffed him on
the nose. He backed up next to me and stared at the puddle.
My eyes went hazy or blurry, or something. The hook disappeared, reappeared, and then an image
shimmered into form right in the middle of that pool of water.
“What the—?” I strained to focus. Koko whimpered as the shape solidified into a green mudpuppy,
which stood on two legs and was about twelve inches tall. Its head turned toward me and large solid
black eyes locked onto a stare-off with me.
