Sometimes at night, I wake up and stare at the heart for hours. I think of how I collected each piece from the beach, how I glued it all together into one big sculpture. I wonder if Connor realizes what it means, that he’ll always have a piece of me no matter what happens. Each piece of glass is another piece of myself that I gave to him.

It’s too bad I didn’t keep any pieces for myself.

At the beginning of senior year, Ann was a smiling, straight-A student and track star with friends and a future. Then she met a haunted young man named Connor. Only she can heal his emotional scars; only he could make her feel so loved – and needed. Ann can’t recall the pivotal moment it all changed, when she surrendered everything to be with him, but by graduation, her life has become a dangerous high wire act. Just one mistake could trigger Connor’s rage, a senseless storm of cruel words and violence damaging everything – and everyone – in its path.

This evocative slideshow of flashbacks reveals a heartbreaking story of love gone terribly wrong.

My Thoughts:

I really do not know where to start with this book — it has an incredibly strong message that women and teens alike need to hear and understand.  That being said, it is also a very difficult topic to write and do well.  Amanda Grace does this in a very reflective manner almost as though Ann is looking back on the last year in reflections.  Immediately, upon starting the story one is faced with Ann’s fear and pain.  This set a very strong start for the book.  When Ann and Conner were good, they were a great couple with a lot of love but when things went wrong it got ugly quickly.  Ann’s best friend knows something is wrong but really feels like there is nothing she can do but be there for Ann when she needs her.  I think that is one of the best parts of this book as it also kind of addressed what goes on in the lives of those around the person who is in an abusive relationship.  I would highly recommend this book but warn to be aware of the content and be prepared for some tears.

My Rating:

5 Penguins

A strong message that needs to be heard

Well written and sensitive to the nature of the topic

It's Monday What Are You Reading?

This great meme is hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World of Books. Each week will share with you the books we are reading, just finished reading and those books we are planning to read this week.

Some of you might have noticed that it has been pretty quiet around here for the last few days.  That’s because we headed north for the last long weekend before school started.  That’s right everyone, school in Michigan doesn’t start until the day after labor day.  So that being said, I got a ton of reading done because….there is only dial up and it is SUPER slow.  Anyway on with the summary.
