Overview

What do you really know about Love?
Love’s her name, but it’s not her whole story . . .

Love Bukowski is a new sophomore at Hadley Hall, the posh prep school where her father is now principal. Raised by her single dad (with more than a little help from her funky aunt Mable), almost-sixteen-year-old Love is strong willed, with a wry sense of humor—but will she fit into the world of Hadley Hall? In the made-for-TV version of her life, she’s got cool friends and hot guys galore. But being a “fac brat” makes new friends hard to come by, and the guys—well, that remains to be seen. Now Love’s got to step it up if she’s going to overcome her less-than-glamorous reality and get that walk-on role in her own fantasies.

My Review

This was a really fun cute book.  I really enjoyed the format as it was not just straight story there are side comments and just a good teen feel to the book.  Love has moved to Hadley Hall when her father takes the position as principal.  She seems to fit in quite quickly even though she really feels like she is on the outside.  She has some wild adventures and finds herself in trouble sometimes despite knowing that she also represents her father.  This is just a story that feels like it could take place in any high school across the country.  It highlights the good and the bad of being a teen, not just in actions and challenges but it what the world puts in front of you.  My favorite part of this story is the relationships that grow and evolve as the story progresses – like we all know ever changing!  I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

Phaedra Michaels is a small town psychologist who is beginning to lose hope. Two of her patients at the local hospital in Dismal, Alabama have just killed themselves, she’s still reeling from her divorce and what turned out to be a disastrous marriage, and her father has died, leaving her without any notion of who her real mother is.

Just as Phaedra decides to commit herself to a serious drinking problem and an eating disorder, or two, a mysterious spell book arrives in the mail. Feeling desperate, Phaedra uses it to cast spells to save her fading patients. Suddenly, good things start happening.  Phaedra’s patients begin to get better and she even starts dating the sexy doctor from the hospital.

Phaedra is so happy she doesn’t notice the small things that start to go wrong in Dismal, or the dark creatures slithering out of the shadows near her house. When Phaedra finally realizes her spells have attracted every card-carrying demon from hell, she has no choice but to accept help from a slightly nerdy, 500 year-old warlock with a penchant for wearing super hero T-shirts and a knack for getting under Phaedra’s skin. Now, if only she could get the hang of this witch thing, she might be able to save her town.

Overview

He’s a magic baby daddy.

High school senior Gabe Delgado is trying to trade his bad-boy ways for clean living. He remembers nothing about the night a mysterious girl loved him and left him at a party, except . . . there was a kind of magic around her that had nothing to do with his hangover the next day. Now he finds that “magic” in a basket on his doorstep, cooing at him like a happy little bird.

Gabe, you probably already know our baby is, well, different. If not, you’ll find out soon enough. Let’s just say she has certain qualities most babies don’t have. The thing is, I’m scared. I’m on my own and can’t keep her safe. But you can. You’re strong. You have a family to watch out for her. Bad people want her. That’s why I left her with you. I don’t really understand what’s going on, but it has something to do with The Abolesco. Don’t try to find me. Please, take care of our baby girl and love her. Okay?

The Abolesco are not friends of the family. They’re on baby Birdie’s trail, but why? Suddenly party-boy Gabe has to man up to protect his daughter. Not so easy when her talents include vanishing into thin air. It’s up to Gabe and his girl-pal Abby-who has some extraordinary secrets of her own-to find out what’s up with something called the Scientific Academy of Merit, what the goons want with Birdie, and whether other kids like Birdie can be saved, too.

Overview

High School Senior Gabe Delgado was going about his business not knowing that his world would be suddenly turned upside-down when he finds a baby left of his porch.  The note included with the baby tells him that the baby is his and begs for him to keep her at least until the diapers run now.  Gabe is convinced that there is no way that this baby is his, that is until his father finds that the baby has the Delgado family birth mark.  Gabe’s father sets about ensuring that Gabe takes care of his responsibility, including signing the baby up at his high school’s day care center.  This is quite an eye opener for Gabe since he long made fun of the young mothers that use the center.  Even more unexpected is the help Gabe finds from the girl next door who he never really paid attention to.  The Delgado family quickly realizes that “Birdie” is different when she disappears from the table when she is about ready to roll off.  Gabe never believed in magic but his shortsightedness is quickly replaced when he realizes just how much danger his daughter is in and just how much magic there is out there in the world.

This was a fun story much different that any magic stories I have read in the past.  It has a great balance of magic vs. real world in it which left me wanting to read more.  I do wish there had been more character development with the girl next door and some more of her and Gabe’s story.  I feel like the book was left open ended enough to be able to explore more of the relationships I felt were lacking a little in this book.  Don’t get me wrong there is some background but I felt like there were things missing or things that I would have like to have expanded on.  I would look forward to reading more about the Delgado family and baby Birdie.
