Star Wars Reads Day

Today is the day of the year that Star Wars fans come together to celebrate Star Wars, Reading and even better reading Star Wars.  There are over 1,000 events in book stores and libraries all around the nation, each one unique and may include author appearances, crafts, trivia, contests and exclusive giveaways.  Check out the map on the Star Wars Reads website to find an event near you. This series of events was created by Lucasfilm and its publishing partners.

We attended the event at the Barnes and Noble location in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  Upon arriving at the event, we were welcomed to tables full of Star Wars related books, toys and activities.

All of the boys in my house love Star Wars, including my husband.  They had a great time checking out the books and waiting to see what the event was going to hold.  And then we heard it from some place deep in the store, the sound of Darth Vader breathing.  We were surprised to find not just Darth Vader but a whole group of Storm Troopers, one Snow Trooper, and Boba Fett.  This group was wonderful.  They posed for picture with everyone, including the adults and then spent time with the kids.  They were picking up books of the shelves and showing them to each other and the kids.  Without staying a word they were encouraging reading and not just reading Star Wars books.  A huge thank you goes out to the 501st Legion – Great Lakes Garrison.  This group is completely made of volunteers that donate their time to attend events and are not for hire.  I was so impressed with their professionalism and great interaction with each of the kids.  Here are just a few of the pictures we took during the interactions.

After posing for the pictures, they just mingled with everyone while they did a few drawing for books, book marks, posters and other fun Star Wars stuff.  Anthony was lucky enough to win a book and being that he was one of the few children who were old enough to read chapter books, he won a copy of Revan by Drew Karpyshyn.  The was very excited to win a prize.

And then to wrap up the event each child was provided a goody bag with all kinds of crafts and Star Wars stuff.  They could stay and do the crafts or take them home to do at a later time.  This was a really fun event and I know my boys are looking forward to attending another Star Wars Reads Day event next year.  This was a nicely done event and an once in a lifetime opportunity to have your picture taken with Darth Vader.
