Synopsis:

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

Laurel’s life is the very definition of normal . . . until the morning when she wakes up to discover a flower blooming from her back. As it turns out, nothing in Laurel’s life is what it seems. Now, with the help of an alluring faerie sentry who holds the key to her true past, Laurel must race to save her human family from the centuries-old faerie enemies who walk among them.

My Thoughts:

My very first thought on this book is why did I wait so long to read it!  I could not put it down.  I picked this book up at a book signing along with Divergent and Starcrossed but for some reason I never picked this one up to read even though I loved the other two books!  I really wish that I had read this sooner so I could be farther along in Laurel’s story and know more.

This was a very unique and different take on fairies.  I actually enjoyed the twists and liberties that Pike took when creating Laurel’s story.  I loved the initial discovery of Laurel’s blossom and how she reacts.  It is just classic and the fun move on from there.  The flow is great, it is one of the reasons that I read the entire book in one sitting.  It just begged to be read.

Pike does a wonderful job with foreshadowing to more coming but in a way that did not leave a major cliffhanger and just in a nice place that leaves you wanting to know more and figure out what happens between Laurel, the fairies, and her home life.

My Rating:

4 penguins – Great story I can’t wait to read Spells.
