“The dead don’t talk. I don’t know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. He tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo’s police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it’s different.
A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world’s worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.
Today is August 14….

My Thoughts

This was the first Dean Koontz book I have read or listened to so I did not know what to expect really.  This was a good story.  As a matter of fact, I had to sit in my car at work yesterday morning so that I could finish the last 15 minutes of the story.  I just had to know what happened.  I like that this was written from a first person point of view of Odd Thomas’ memory of what happen between August 14 and 15.  It is written in a manner that at time is confusing.  The tenses change and Odd reminds himself that he should be telling this story lightly.  I loved that I could not guess what was going to come next until it actually happened.  I get very frustrated when I can tell the story without reading it.  Until I started writing this review, I was unaware that this is part of a series.  I am going to have to find out what happens to Odd Thomas next.  The reader on this book was very strong – different inflections used from different characters.  This I enjoy, it makes them come to life for me.

My Rating

4 of 5 stars  I will be checking out the other books in this series
