Synopsis:

I, Cassia Bernard, do solemnly swear to find pure red—my passion—this summer. Dad’s passion is art. When he’s painting, no one can reach him, not even me. My mom’s passion was the ocean. She said the ocean allows you to see whatever you want to see. That was one of the last things she ever said to me…

Sometimes what your heart desires isn’t what it needs. Over the course of a hot Miami summer, sixteen-year-old Cassia discovers that sometimes it takes bullies and basketball, a best friend, and a gorgeous guy to help you understand what you actually need—and to help you see that, maybe, everything isn’t so black and white.

My Thoughts:

This was a very realistic story of a  family broken apart by the death of Cassia’s mom.  Cassia challenged by a guidance counselor sets out to try new things in the summer before her junior year.  This starts with basketball on a YMCA league where she is bullied by one of the other players.  This is a big challenge for her especially when she meets a boy, Graham,  at one of her father’s art exhibits.  Cassia faces challenges with both Kate the bully and how to deal with her and trying to grab Graham’s attention away from her father.  She struggles through the summer, breaking her ankle, finding out her father is dating a new woman and the developing feeling she has for Graham.  She feels like she just can’t find a place to belong but will it all end well?

I enjoy the story of what seems to me to be a pretty normal teenage girls life.  It was a great story for demonstrating perseverance and trying new things in order to really find what you love doing.  That was the really eye opener I think in this book was that Cassia learned a lot over this summer but her life really didn’t change all that much.  More she learned to change and adapt.

My Rating:

3 Penguins

A good realistic read

Great for a teen dealing with self esteem concerns or going through big changes in life.

It’s Monday What Are You Reading?

It's Monday What Are You Reading?

This great meme is hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World of Books. Each week will share with you the books we are reading, just finished reading and those books we are planning to read this week.

Some of you might have noticed that it has been pretty quiet around here for the last few days.  That’s because we headed north for the last long weekend before school started.  That’s right everyone, school in Michigan doesn’t start until the day after labor day.  So that being said, I got a ton of reading done because….there is only dial up and it is SUPER slow.  Anyway on with the summary.
