Born in Ice
This futuristic romantic suspense story grew from a dream, one of a woman frozen in a block of ice and found by fishermen from an undersea world. She’s taken to their home and with the help of advanced medical technology, she recovers. In time she learns she must learn to fit into their social system, one different from what she’s known.
Blurb:
Pulled from an icy grave…into a world of doubt and danger.
Frozen in ice for seventy-five years, Zana Forrester suffers the agony of rebirth to learn her son is dead, and her daughter’s whereabouts is unknown. The year is 2155. A man’s soothing voice and gray eyes haunt her drug induced dreams. When she recovers, she meets their owner and finds her heart in danger. But, a relationship isn’t a consideration; she must find her daughter.
Brock Callahan is drawn to the beautiful woman taken aboard his salvage ship. He’s determined she’ll be his wife and a mother to his young daughter, but he vows not to love her. All the women he’s loved died. While Zana searches for her daughter, Brock must protect Zana from the evil that threatens.
My editor for Champagne Books has graciously given permission for me to post the Prologue and Chapter One of Born in Ice, so for 10 days I’ll be sharing another installment.
Chapter One – installment 8
“I’ll take good care of him while you get into dry clothes.”
Brock looked at the scarred face of one of his top men. Digger had
been wounded more times than Brock could count, yet mended quickly. The
crew nicknamed him Digger as it seemed every move he made got him closer
to his grave. He was the only crew member to call him Cal, his shortened last
name. They had a long history together and the title Skipper or Captain
didn’t roll off Digger’s lips comfortably. He was a good friend, one Brock
trusted. If the others resented the familiarity, they didn’t let on.
Brock nodded and stood.
Digger lifted Pepe and stretched him out on a fold-down berth.
Jonas, one of the finest snipers Brock had ever seen, joined Digger. They
quickly, but painstakingly removed Pepe’s suit. Later it would be repaired.
Valuable, it would be restored many times before being discarded.
When they had him naked and wrapped in wool blankets, Brock
turned to tend to his own needs. As he changed, he watched them clean the
wound and apply a dressing. The wound was deep and the boy would need
antibiotics. Though the ice was clean, he didn’t cut corners when it came to
his men’s health. They were his crew, their loyalty and skills important, but
they were also extended family, like brothers.
Once dry and warm again, he returned to the con deck and
approached Luke at the helm. “Set our course for home.”
Luke frowned. “Pepe will get better care in Abyss.”
“Yeah, I know, but the wound isn’t serious, and our pirate friends
have more than one craft. They might try to screw with us.” No one knew the
whereabouts of their undersea berth near their home. They’d be able to safely
unload their patient and their cargo.
They had a small hospital in their modest community of Refuge, one
that could take care of the bulk of situations. When their technology wasn’t
enough, patients were transported to Abyss where expertise and equipment
had no limits.
“What’s our status, Luke?”
“We lost our pursuers ten minutes ago, Captain.”
“Good. Let’s stop and pull the vehicle aboard. We’ll make better
time that way.”
“Aye, sir.”
