Synopsis:

He was the one you called when you needed rescuing…

But who was Taft Bowman going to call when he needed help? Because ten years ago Laura Pendleton, the love of his life, had left town without a word, then or since. Now she was back, with a new last name–and two adorable, high-needs little ones in tow. Well, Taft had been stupid enough to let her go once before…he wasn’t about to make the same mistake again. He’d never stopped loving her–and one look at those adorable little faces and he knew that he was meant to be with Laura and her kids forever. All he had to do was convince her that this time he was a man she could count on!

My Thoughts:

I have been on a bit of a romance kick lately and this book was a nice compliment to the theme.  RaeAnne Thayne provides a consistent style that is well formed yet not predictable.  The overview of this story does not do it justice.  It is so much more than Taft and Laura.  The story starts with Taft, the town fire chief and his team responding to a fire at the local inn, Cold Creek Inn.  Upon arrival, Taft is faced with Laura, his old fiancé, and her children, one of whom accidently set the fire.  Taft is immediately drawn to Laura but more so to her kids who are now fatherless.  Taft knows that Laura hates him but can’t seem to want anything but to be around her.  Laura recently widowed has move back home to help her mother with the Inn and doesn’t have time for anything else.  Some how the two of them keep crossing paths and all of the past come flying out.  Taft was in a deep dark place when they broke up ten years before after his parents were brutally murdered.  Laura knew that he needed time to heal but he would not postpone their wedding so she broke it off and let everyone think that it was mutual.  Both are fighting the feeling that they currently are having.  The big questions is can they for long and how will it affect Laura’s kids.

I loved the dynamic of this story.  The back history is strong and not revealed all at once which made a fun read as it unfolded and left you wondering how much more could be happening.  Laura’s kids were written it a style that held fast and made your heart break for them.  I like the balance between romance and plot.  If you are looking for a solid romance with a little bit of a twist check this story out.
